On 21 – 22 May 2018, Lorna McGregor and Vivian Ng participated in the Data Justice Conference 2018, which was hosted by the Data Justice Lab at Cardiff University. The conference looked at social justice in terms of research and practices, at a time of datafication and the normalisation of data collection and analysis.
Lorna McGregor and Vivian Ng gave a presentation on ‘Can a Human Rights-Based Approach Add Value to Algorithmic Accountability’, during the session ‘Auditing, Explaining and Accountable Data’. Based on a paper co-authored with Daragh Murray, the presentation outlined some existing approaches to algorithmic accountability and looked at how the human rights framework can contribute to effective accountability for the use of algorithms in decision-making.
