In August 2017, the European Forum Alpbach took place, co-organised by the Austrian Ministry of Science and the Austrian Science Fund. The Forum considered ‘Conflict & Cooperation’, discussing the future of research, politics and economics over a 17-day programme.
On 25 August, Linsey McGoey gave a presentation at the ‘Open Science, Dark Knowledge: Science in Age of Ignorance’ session of the technology symposium. The panel considered the challenges of increasing ignorance and misinformation in decision-making processes in the era of big data, highlighting the potential of big data in enhancing public knowledge. Linsey highlighted the need for transparency in access to information and the need to enhance duties of actors knowingly spreading false information.
